I'm a postdoctoral researcher passionate about exploring how education can be more accessible and supportive for all students. As a first-generation Latina born in Peru and raised in Miami, my journey has been shaped by cultural experiences and challenges which have drive my commitment to my work. My focus is all about understanding how students experience a sense of belonging—or a lack of it—within higher education. I'm currently exploring the intersections of identity, education, and institutional support to better understand student experiences in higher education institutions. I truly believe that through storytelling and research, we can shift institutional practices to create a more welcoming and supportive environment for students.
Before transitioning into STEM education research, I completed a Ph.D. in Biology, specializing in genomics, bioinformatics, landscape ecology, and pedagogy. My research on mosquito monitoring and citizen science in Miami Dade County shaped my approach to interdisciplinary collaboration and data-driven public engagement. While I loved my work in biology, I found that my true passion lies in education—specifically, understanding how the stories of students can shape the future of STEM education. I’ve since shifted my focus to the social dimensions of education to amplify the voices of students in STEM fields.
Outside of research, I’m all about mentorship and making science accessible to students from all walks of life. I volunteer with organizations like SACNAS and Letters to a Pre-Scientist, where I connect with younger students who may not always see themselves represented in STEM fields. One of my favorite things is writing letters to middle and high school students, sharing my own experiences and encouraging them to imagine themselves as scientists. I’m also involved in several exciting initiatives like the VOCES program, where I collaborate with other scholars to create long-lasting institutional changes to support undocumented students.
When I’m not deep into research or volunteering, I love reading memoirs and autobiographies, particularly stories of resilience that reflect my own journey. I’m also always considering ways to improve higher education and design courses that support a wide range of students.
If you're passionate about transforming education or interested in discussing how policies and experiences shape learning, I’d love to connect! Feel free to drop me a message through the ‘Contact’ tab. Let’s collaborate and make a difference together!
